We have so much to be grateful for. If we look at where we started in 2016 and where we all are now....there's so much to celebrate. I love this time of the year in America because we take a day to simply give thanks (and eat pie). I know for some the meaning has gotten diluted with shopping and all....but for me....I still take time to reflect and process everything that has happened. As we all begin to wrap up the year this is a great time to begin making list of all the things we are grateful for. I think there are three key things to be grateful for: 1. The things you wanted and you got. What did you want this year? Start a blog? Write a book? Launch a business? Which of those things did you accomplish? Make sure to celebrate how far you've come! You are not in the same on December 1 as you were on January 1...and this is worth celebrating! 2. The things you got but never knew … [Read More...]

Regardless of who you voted for, no one can deny that this election has been emotional. This election, and many others around the world, have revealed some deep cracks in our humanity. Many of us are afraid of anyone who doesn't look and act just like we do. It's easy to feel disappointed and hopeless when we see all that is broken. So what do we do now? We can wait for another election...hope for another candidate to say the right things...wish that things turn out ok....or.....there is another option. What if we started solving problems? Government can be good at a lot of things such as collecting taxes, providing infrastructure, administering laws and protecting through police and military, but one thing they don't do well....and honestly can't do well is love humanity. The issues that this election has brought up...our fears, hatreds, frustrations and hurts can't be solved … [Read More...]
Fear is one of the key enemies of creativity and this year it is definitely in the air. This election year has more than it's share of fear on both sides of the aisle. Not only do we have a very tense presidential election but we also have a string of tragic world events that have contributed to a general sense of fear and distrust. There's no doubt that fear will influence our creativity and art but it doesn't have to govern our lives and decisions. We can loosen the grip of fear in our lives by feeding the courage and starving the fear. Feed the Courage. If you want to be brave, do brave things. Fear can be replaced with confidence if we can reestablish control. One of the key drivers behind fear is lack of control. We need to do whatever we can to reestablish a sense of control over our circumstances and we do this by doing brave things. These brave things … [Read More...]
Cirque De Soleil, Waze, Starbucks, Curves, iTunes....these are all game changers and they've all used blue ocean strategy to get where they are. Blue Ocean Strategy is a radical change from the traditional way of thinking about business. Most industries still focus on the same customer base, mostly in the same way. That traditional approach is red ocean thinking. Like sharks, everyone is trying to live off the same prey (customers.) Blue ocean turns away from the crowded space and looks for new opportunities. If you're tired of doing business like everyone else, here's how to develop Blue Ocean Strategy. Look beyond your current customers Look to other industries/models Look for the gaps in your industry Look to the future … [Read More...]
Imagination allows us to see new ideas, new products, new art forms, new approaches. However, we only have a limited number of resources to work with. So when we imagine something new, we have to be willing to sacrifice something already in place. When I grew up I had one set of Lego (not because I was that poor, but because it was the 70's) with a limited number of pieces. If I built a police station and I wanted to build a house, I had to sacrifice the police station. Why? I simply didn't have enough pieces to pull off both. This is how it works in real life as well. We are limited by 24 hours, mental capacity, skill sets, work requirements and of course finances. So when we're dreaming of something new in our business or creativity we need to remember that before we can build something new we must be willing to sacrifice something old. … [Read More...]
Lauren Glass is the southern entrepreneur behind Throw Pillows, a give back company. This 25 year old entrepreneur is already seven years into her journey and there's no stopping her. At the age of 18 she was wrestling with her purpose and the work she wanted to spend her life doing. Being 5' 0" she ruled out being an olympic volleyball player, and quickly realized that there was no career in watching Netflix so she set out to discover her "thing". One day she asked herself the question "If I were to die right now, what would people say about me?" and her life changed forever. Lauren founded Beds4kids to help provide mattresses for children who were without. She was in the process of writing grant proposals and soon realized that this process was risky and slow to produce results. Her entrepreneurial spirit jumped in and she decided to fund her non-profit by launching the give … [Read More...]
